What You鈥檒l Learn

In this program, you鈥檒l complete nine core courses designed to develop both foundational theory and hands-on skills that apply directly to the workplace. Courses will teach you to navigate the full lifecycle of information management鈥攆rom its planning and creation to its distribution, protection and archiving鈥攁nd master information systems knowledge in analysis, data, policy and technology.

And, as part of Dominican鈥檚 esteemed graduate program offering, this information management degree program will help you develop the leadership, communication and collaboration skills you need to stand out in an ever-evolving information environment.

Information Management Degree Concentrations

In addition to the core curriculum, you鈥檒l complete three elective courses to create your own learning plan, or choose one of the following areas of specialization:

Cybersecurity: Learn the technologies, policies and procedures used to protect data, computers and networks. In this concentration, you鈥檒l learn to prevent and mitigate unauthorized access to data, data theft and malicious data corruption. Courses include: Introduction to Information Security, Organizational Informational Security, and Information Privacy.

Web Design: Use your creativity and analytical mind to help users access information. In the web design concentration, you鈥檒l get an overview of the software development process and become familiar with technologies that professionals use to design and implement web applications. Courses include: Systems and Analysis and Design, Advanced Web Design, and Social Media and Emerging Media.

Digital Content Management (DCM): From blogs to digital resources, digital content is growing and becoming integral to our world. Learn to create, manage and govern it in this forward-thinking concentration that gives you skills for the strategic planning, curating and managing of digital materials. Courses include: Digital Curation, Metadata for Digital Resources, and Records and Information Management

Analytics: Big data requires a new and innovative approach to analytics. You will learn the methods, tools, and skills to discover the structures, patterns, trends, and relationships in complex data sets in order to transform raw data into useful information and actionable knowledge. A multi-disciplinary approach using statistics, machine learning, and information management are used and provide practical  experience in solving problems with real-world data. Courses include: Big Data and Competitive Intelligence, Data Mining, and Network Analytics.

A fast-track option for mid-career professionals

No matter what career stage you鈥檙e in, you can tailor this program to your goals and level of experience. Mid-career professionals with at least five years of experience in technology fields can choose our accelerated MSIM track. You can opt out of two foundation courses and complete your degree over four part-time semesters. No matter which track you choose, our hybrid format will enable you to benefit from the personal interaction of small classes鈥攁long with the convenience and rapid response of online learning.

One program鈥攖wo paths

Early-Career MSIM: For students directly out of undergraduate programs or students looking to switch careers. The 12-course (36 semester hour) curriculum prepares students for professional responsibilities and leadership roles in a broad spectrum of information settings.

Mid-Career MISM: For students with 5 or more years of experience in the technology professions. The 10-course (30 semester hour) curriculum prepares students for new career opportunities and leadership roles.

What to Expect as You Earn Your Master鈥檚 in Information Management

At Dominican, we take pride not only in the curriculum we offer, but also in the student experience. That鈥檚 why we balance the flexibility of online classes with meaningful in-person experiences that ensure students are getting the most out of their degree.

When you enter this program, you鈥檒l complete your first two courses in eight-week segments in a hybrid format: four to five weekend sessions, plus online coursework. You鈥檒l then take additional courses online or in hybrid formats. Electives are also offered in a variety of formats鈥攊n the evenings and on weekends as well as online or in hybrid formats.

Toward the end of your program, you鈥檒l participate in a practicum study at an information center in the Chicago area. You鈥檒l also submit a portfolio at the end of the program demonstrating your work in the information studies department.

In order to apply to our master鈥檚 in information management program, you will need the following materials:

  • Official transcripts from an accredited bachelor鈥檚 degree in any field
  • Personal essay of at least 500 words
  • GRE or MAT exam score

An abbreviated process is offered to those with an accredited information science graduate degree who are pursuing further certification.
