Dominican University was prominently featured last month in the Wednesday Journal of Oak Park.

Genaro A. Balcazar, chief operating officer and senior vice president, was the focus of the story, 鈥淒ominican University exec named a Notable Latino Leader by Crain鈥檚,鈥 published Dec. 17. The piece highlights the honor Balcazar received recently from Crain鈥檚 Chicago Business and the university鈥檚 mission-focused work.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a collective effort,鈥 Balcazar said of the Crain鈥檚 recognition. 鈥淚t鈥檚 tireless work we do. I have the privilege of working with some talented people who want to provide access to higher education ... They are the ones at the forefront with the engagement with the students we serve. If there is any recognition, it goes to them.鈥

On Dec. 20, DU鈥檚 grant-funded Social Work Integration for Thriving Schools (SWIFT) Schools Project was also featured in the Wednesday Journal.

The story looks at efforts that are underway to grow and diversify the school social worker concentration. This work includes placing paid student interns at underserved elementary and high schools near the River Forest campus.

鈥淭here is a shortage generally of social workers, but it鈥檚 more pronounced in districts where there is a diverse student body,鈥 said SWIFT program director Maria Elena Pascarella. 鈥淲e know our students are uniquely qualified to provide mental health services in our partner schools, because of their lived experience.鈥
