What Is God? Does God Relate to Humankind?

These are some of the oldest and most profound human questions. The theology major looks for answers by drawing on the 800-year-old Dominican tradition of religious study as a disciplined and demanding search for truth. In small classes, you鈥檒l work side-by-side with talented faculty who will challenge you intellectually and guide you thoughtfully through your own search for understanding. You鈥檒l examine Catholic and Christian beliefs within the context of the world鈥檚 richly varied religious and cultural traditions. You鈥檒l expand your awareness of social, ethical and moral issues, and learn to write, think critically and analyze problems at a whole new level. This is a powerful and compelling course of study.

More Ways to Learn, On Campus and Beyond

Practical experience is built into the theology curriculum. You鈥檒l have many opportunities to combine academic study with compassionate service to people in need, in the Chicago area and around the world. You might complete an internship with an organization that serves homeless youth, or assist a congregation, or both. The university partners with , a national organization which brings together young people of different religious and moral traditions for service and dialogue around shared values. We especially encourage you to take advantage of Dominican鈥檚 outstanding study abroad program. You鈥檒l have your choice of programs on four continents.

Show Your Stuff

Undergraduate research and creative expression is a Dominican trademark. Theology鈥攚ith its focus on the deeper unity underlying all reality鈥攊s a rich source of topics for such expression. We actively encourage our students to develop their own original research and creative projects. You鈥檒l enjoy full faculty support and get a chance to present your work at a campus expo in April. You can even apply for university grant funding. The Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creative Investigations Program (URSCI) also will fund your travel to academic and professional conferences across the U.S. Your faculty mentors will watch for opportunities that are perfect for you.
